Zk-poc

Zero Knowledge proof of compression (ZK-POC)

Zero-Knowledge Proof of Compression (zkPoC)

Overview

Zero-Knowledge Proof of Compression (zkPoC) is a novel cryptographic primitive that enables trustless verification of compressed data on blockchains and decentralized systems. Instead of requiring full files or raw calldata to be stored on-chain, zkPoC allows a prover to post a compressed file plus a zero-knowledge proof showing that it decompresses faithfully to a known original.

This approach directly addresses blockchain state bloat and opens a path to scalable, verifiable storage for rollups, NFTs, archival systems, and cross-chain bridges.

Key Differentiation from Prior Art

  • Filecoin / Proof-of-Storage: Ensures data is stored but does not verify compression correctness. zkPoC explicitly proves decompression fidelity.
  • Arweave / IPFS: Store full shards or files. zkPoC anchors only compressed data + proofs, cutting cost dramatically.
  • Generic zk-Proofs: While zkSNARKs/STARKs can prove arbitrary computations, zkPoC defines a dedicated primitive optimized for compression verification with deterministic codecs and recursive proof aggregation.

Pros

  • 📦 Reduced storage costs: Only compressed data + proof are anchored on-chain.
  • 🔒 Verifiable fidelity: Proof ensures decompression yields the exact original file.
  • 🌍 Cross-chain utility: Works across Ethereum, Solana, Arweave, and rollups.
  • 🚀 Scalable: Supports chunking + recursive aggregation for very large datasets.
  • 🔑 Privacy-preserving: Original data need not be revealed, only commitments.

Cons / Limitations

  • ⚠️ Circuit complexity: Compression algorithms (e.g., LZ77, Huffman) are heavy for zk circuits.
  • ⚠️ Proof generation costs: Computationally expensive for large files until zk hardware matures.
  • ⚠️ Codec standardization: Requires fixed parameters for deterministic compression.
  • ⚠️ Adoption hurdle: Integration into rollups/DA layers requires engineering effort and ecosystem buy-in.
