🌍 What is Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is a month-long global event held every October, encouraging people to contribute to open-source projects on GitHub.
It’s organized by DigitalOcean, GitHub, and developer communities around the world.

Whether you’re a student, beginner, or experienced coder — anyone can participate!

By contributing to open-source projects, you:

• Learn real-world coding collaboration 🧑‍💻
• Build your portfolio and resume 📚
• Become part of the global open-source community 🌍

🪜 Step-by-Step Guide to Participate

Follow these steps carefully to make your first contribution! 👇

🌿 Step 1: Fork the Repository

1. Visit our repo:
   👉 https://github.com/MLSA-UET-Peshawar/Hacktoberfest-2025
2. Click the “Fork” button (top-right corner).
   This creates your own copy of the repository in your GitHub account.

💻 Step 2: Clone Your Fork

Now, download the forked repo to your computer.

git clone https://github.com/<your-username>/Hacktoberfest-2025.git

🌿 Step 3: Create a New Branch

Creating a new branch keeps your work separate from the main code and prevents conflicts.

Run these commands one by one:

cd Hacktoberfest-2025
git checkout -b my-first-contribution

🧠 Step 4: Make Your Contribution

Now it’s time to add something valuable to the project! 💡
You can:

• Add a new file or project inside your favorite language folder (Python/, C++/, Java/, etc.)
• Fix spelling errors or improve explanations in the Docs/ folder
• Add your name and GitHub profile link in the CONTRIBUTORS.md file

Example:
Create a new file inside the Python/ folder named hello_world.py and write:

print("Hello Hacktoberfest 2025 from UET Peshawar!")

💾 Step 5: Stage and Commit Your Changes

Once your changes are ready, tell Git to track and save them:

git add .
git commit -m "Added my first contribution"

☁️ Step 6: Push Your Branch to GitHub

Now upload (push) your branch from your computer to your forked repository on GitHub:

git push origin my-first-contribution

🚀 Step 7: Open a Pull Request (PR)

You’ve made your changes — now it’s time to merge them into the main repository! ✨

1. Go to your forked repository on GitHub.

2. Click the Compare & pull request button that appears.

3. Write a short title and description of what you did.

   Example title:
   Added Hello World in Python

   Example description:
   This file prints a simple Hello World message as my first Hacktoberfest contribution.

4. Click Create pull request.

You just created your first Pull Request — welcome to the world of open source! 🌍

Your PR will be reviewed by the maintainers (MLSA UET Peshawar team).
Once approved and merged, it will count toward your Hacktoberfest 2025 progress. 🏅
