If new data is added to any path the virtual fs is not refreshed

For example, I have a branch with /mnt/disk1/dir1=RO:/mnt/disk2/dir2=RO:/mnt/disk3/dir3=RO:/mnt/disk4/dir4=RO mounted in /srv/mergerfs/branch1, if I add a new directory to one of the original paths, /srv/mergerfs/branch1 doesn't show the new directory unless I restart the service/remount.

Is this expected?

I'm reading that default cache times are 1 second, so the added directory should have showed up, right?
I'm not constantly adding data to the directories but I want to know if I should just be restarting the service when I do add data.

No. As it says in the docs it will show up as relevant caches expire.
