Key findings:

  • DAA achieves the highest success rate among all routing methods (38.0%)

DAA's three-tier strategy:

  • 1.5B (14.6%): Used only for search: actions (step 0) — just generating the item name
  • 3B (41.7%): Used for smelting and simple moves in early steps
  • 7B (43.7%): Used for recipe interpretation, spatial slot reasoning, and error recovery

Key observations:

  • DAA leads all routing methods on c=1 tasks (smelting: 69.6%, surpassing even 7B's 60.9%)
  • All routing methods fail on c=3 (multi-step shaped recipes): 3B cannot maintain spatial reasoning
  • This matches Dagan et al.'s finding that shaped recipes are especially hard without large models

4. Best-of-Both-Models Effect

DAA succeeds on 5 tasks where the 7B-only baseline fails, demonstrating model diversity benefits:

5. Comparison with Dagan et al. (COLM 2025)

6. Recommended Paper Text

For experiments_part1.tex (PlanCraft paragraph):

We evaluate DAA on PlanCraft using the official multi-step interactive protocol. Each agent interacts with the PlancraftGymWrapper for up to 30 steps, generating actions (move, smelt, think, search) executed in a simulated Minecraft crafting GUI. Success requires the target item to appear in the agent's inventory.

Among the four routing methods evaluated, DAA achieves the highest success rate (38.0%) while using only 54% of the 7B Baseline's cost, yielding the same cost-efficiency ratio (0.70). DAA's advantage comes from its phase-aware three-tier model selection: 1.5B for search queries, 3B for simple actions, and 7B for recipe interpretation and error recovery.

On complexity-1 tasks (smelting), DAA achieves 69.6% — the highest among all routing methods and exceeding the 7B's 60.9%. DAA also demonstrates a best-of-both-models effect, succeeding on 5 tasks where the 7B-only baseline fails, through beneficial model diversity in action generation.
