Hello, Yes, thank's to its open core and mechanism to easily add plugins, this is doable. You can take a look at plugins that are adding new materials here:
There is an example of one of our current core dev working on a new Newton-Raphson for dynamics here : #5173 This example is a PR introducing a new way of solving Lagrangian-based constraints : #3053 More globally, I suggest you to take a look at our documentation here : https://sofa-framework.github.io/doc/ where the API is presented.
