Solved: Intel HD 4600 (i7-4770HQ) Hardware Transcoding with VA-API in Jellyfin

I finally got hardware-accelerated transcoding working on my older Intel HD 4600 (i7-4770HQ) after some trial and error—thanks to DeepSeek Chat for guiding me through it!

The Problem:

Jellyfin spiked the processor to 100%, resulting in choppy playback, cause by software encoding(likely)
Jellyfin kept failing with av1_vaapi/av1_qsv (unsupported on my GPU).
FFmpeg errors (code 251/218) and subtitle burn-in issues.

The Fix:

Switched to h264_vaapi (the only viable HW encoder for HD 4600).

Disabled AV1/HEVC in Jellyfin’s transcoding settings.

Simplified the filter chain (avoided hwdownload/hwupload for subtitles).

Key Settings (Dashboard → Playback → Transcoding):

Hardware Acceleration: VA-API

VA-API Device: /dev/dri/renderD128

Video codec: H.264 (disable HEVC/AV1)

Subtitle burn-in: Only image formats (or disable if possible)

Verification:

FFmpeg now shows:
Copy

Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (High), vaapi(bt709, progressive), 1920x1080  
encoder: Lavc61.3.100 h264_vaapi  

Performance: ~130 fps (GPU actively encoding, per intel_gpu_top).

If you’re on older Intel GPUs, skip AV1/HEVC and stick to H.264!

Honestly I fed deepseek chat a huge amount of logs I was too lazy to read and it just crushed everything and pointed me in the right direction.

Before:

100% CPU throttling = Daughter crying = video not playing

After:

130 fps with h264_vaapi 🎉
CPU cruising like a cruise ship for retired processors

Got this working on a 4790K like more than a decade after I first set it up. So thank you very much. I did leave HEVC software encoding on though.
