Amazon S3 Transfer Acceleration


1. What is S3 Transfer Acceleration?

Amazon S3 Transfer Acceleration is a feature of Amazon S3 that improves the speed of uploading and downloading objects to and from S3 buckets over long geographic distances.

It works by using Amazon CloudFront’s globally distributed edge locations to accelerate data transfer between clients and S3.

Instead of sending data directly to the S3 bucket’s regional endpoint, data is first routed to the nearest AWS edge location, and from there it travels through AWS’s optimized global network backbone to the destination S3 bucket.


2. Problem Without Transfer Acceleration

Normally, when you upload an object to S3:

Client → Public Internet → S3 Regional Endpoint

If the client is geographically far from the bucket region:

6. Accelerated Endpoint Format

When Transfer Acceleration is enabled, AWS provides a special endpoint:

11. Enabling Transfer Acceleration

From AWS Console

  1. Open S3
  2. Select bucket
  3. Go to Properties
